I love this and resonate with it so much! Winter is tough and escaping to somewhere warm to slice it up is heavenly!

Still haven't taken the bike to the Canary Islands but it's high up on my to-do list. Thanks for the good inspo.

Tell me about it, the only thing that sucks is that I didn't start doing it sooner! Where's your sunny destination of choice? Maybe I'll branch out next year...

Would 10/10 recommend the Canaries, get that flight planning app out pronto! ✈️☀️

I usually go to Morocco every year (I actually wrote a post about my winter escape there recently). I feel like it's the closest place you can feel furthest away..if that makes sense. Food, culture, people - they're all amazing.

I did spend a month in Sri Lanka last January and that might have been one of the best months of my life!

Wow - I just read your post and I feel like I could have typed every single one of those words. I'm slowly beginning to realise how widespread the "winter blues" really are, especially for people who rely on the outdoors and adventure for their mental health. I also loved your post on the nine day fortnight. I've been thinking about dropping down to a four-day workweek for the longest time (for all the reasons you mentioned) but it would involve a salary sacrifice and I haven't quite quite figured out whether or not I can make it work...

We did Granguanche (not the race) last year and we loved every second of it. The weather is lovely and the ever changing scenery, incl El Teide, were just breathtaking.

Really enjoyed reading your story and I can’t wait to go back to the Canaries one day!

Oh, awesome! Granguanche (the race) has overlapped with our time here the past two years and we've been lucky to catch a few of the riders as they descended Teide. It looks like an incredible route and challenge, but I'm not sure my legs have it in me to do it as a race. I love that you did it in your own time. Can I ask how long it took you? And did you use accommodation or camp? I might add it to my bucket list for next year...

We did one island a day incl La Graciosa where went to first after flying to Lanzarote. After we did La Gomera we went back to Tenerife by ferry and then rode over back to Santa Cruz where we took a night ferry back to Lanzarote. We had left our bike boxes in a bike shop in Arrecife. For each night we booked a hotel close to the ferry port we used the following morning to get to the next island. It was an amazing trip and adventure and I would recommend it to anybody who enjoys a bit of bike touring in a warm and sunny environment.
